Jesse Lee Interview

Jesse Lee

Jesse Lee is one of my all time favorite country singer songwriters. I first discovered her music in 2005 and I’ve been a fan ever since. Love what she does as an artist and think she has a bright future doing what she does. If you like good country music then you gotta check out Jesse Lee as she rocks.

1. What inspires you now when writing songs?

– Life. Relationships a lot of times. Friends stories, experiences, and
listening to other people’s music.
2. How did the duet with Uncle Kracker came about?
– Uncle Kracker and I were on the same label.  Someone at Atlantic
thought that ‘Me Again’ would sound better as a duet and they suggested that I
sing it with him.  After listening to some of my music he said that I
reminded him of a young Dolly Parton.  They sent me to LA to record with
his producer, Rob Cavallo.  While in the studio I ended up rewriting my
verse to make it work better as a duet and sound more like something a woman
would say.  It’s funny how easy it is to record with other artists these
days.  I didn’t even meet Kracker until after we sang together.  Now
we’re twitter buds, he’s a very sweet guy.
3. How has social media helped you as an artist?
– Social media has changed the music business for the better.  I love
being able to interact with my fans so easily.  It helps me know what
people are enjoying and helps me as a fan to catch on to great new music out
there.  It’s funny, one time I didn’t know when my song, “Kissing in Cars,”
on the Country Strong soundtrack was being released- I found out it was on
iTunes from a fan.  Now instead of giving fans the information, they’re
giving it to you first!
4. What has been the highlight for you so far playing music?
– Probably the coolest feeling was hearing my song on the radio for the
first time.
5. When will be expect to hear an album from you?
– I just released my first EP, “Come After Me.”  On it are eight of
the songs I recorded while signed to Atlantic Records.  I recorded these
songs about four years ago, so I I’ve been waiting for a long time for my fans
to hear them.  I feel even though it’s only 8 songs, there’s something for
everyone on here.  There a few love songs, falling out of love, growing up
and wanting it all back.  Come After Me was a song inspired by a boyfriend
who at the time I kept breaking up with for the same reason every time.  I
walked into the room to write with two other girls, told them all about, and
said, “I just wish he’d fight for me.”  Those kind of songs pretty much
write themselves.  I will be releasing more music before the end of the
year, so stay tuned.

6. What advice can you give to somebody wanting to play music?
– I’d say that they should start studying songs, taking them apart and
learning how to write.  It’s always easier if you play an instrument.
So, pick up an instrument and learn to play it.  I can fumble around on
guitar, but I’m not a great guitar player by any means.  I wish I had taken
my piano and guitar lessons more seriously as a kid.
7. Who have you enjoyed playing with recently?
– At the moment, I’m playing a lot of writer nights in Nashville.
This means I’m up on stage with friends I write with all the time.  I love
these because I don’t have to travel to play and it’s really all about the song
in Nashville.  I love listening to my co-writers sing new songs they’ve
written as well.  We also have too much fun on stage together.
8. Who would you most like to write and perform a song with if you haven’t
already?
– I’m a big fan of Miranda Lambert.  I’d love to collaborate with her
one day.
9. What have you enjoyed listening to recently

– I like that “Paris (Oh La La)” song a lot that Grace Potter sings.
I love everything Blake Shelton does.  His song “Drink On it” is on repeat
right now.
