Casino Sunrise is an exciting new artist worth checking out and this is what he had to say

1. For someone unfamiliar with your music, how would you describe Casino Sunrise?

In essence, Casino Sunrise are a rock band but we like to keep the beats dancey and the melodies catchy. We match the guitars with warm, old school Juno/dirty bass synth sounds and pads. We’ve been accused of jumping on the EDM band wagon but really just enjoy working with a bunch of different sounds and ideas.

2. Tell us a little bit about your writing process. Do you labour over songs or prefer to let things flow naturally?

I have trouble forcing song ideas and especially lyrics. Usually I’m just sitting around, having a coffee or something and I get flooded with ideas and get really pumped. I end up writing a whole heap of stuff in a short period of time but that only happens intermittently. Being the main songwriter in the band, the other guys get pissed off waiting around for new stuff to work on. That said, a lot of our writing happens during the recording process and we all sit around in the studio labouring over the tunes.

3. As far as breakout success is concerned, is it all about the strength of a song or does being in the right musical climate at right time make all the difference?

I think it has to be a combination of both. You do hear certain styles of singing or production treatments that become fashionable depending on what is “in” at the time. I totally subscribe to the idea that every great song can be stripped down and played in any style and still be awesome. I love hearing about bands that slave away at their sound and keep their integrity and then BAM, they are suddenly what’s cool. That’s much better than chasing the in-fashion dragon.

4. How important is social media to you in regards to engaging with an audience?

Social media is definitely vital. It’s a bit of a chicken and an egg situation though. You need online presence and “likes” to get shows and exposure, but it’s hard to get shows and exposure without online presence and “likes”.

5. What inspired you to take music more seriously?

Music has been such a big part of my life since I was a kid, so I can’t really remember what exactly inspired me. My mum used to sit me down in front of the record player and crank Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple etc… so that might have something to do with it. Thanks mum!

6. What’s spinning on your playlist atm? Any guilty pleasures?

Nothing too guilty. I finally have a record player (I guess I’m guilty about that) so am stocking up on the classics. Bob Marley, Nirvana, Radiohead.

7. Are you a fan of keeping the album format alive or do you think there’s more benefit to release singles or EPs with the influence of streaming platforms arguably shortening attention spans?

I have the romantic notion of keeping the album dream alive. That said, I definitely see more benefit in shorter releases when trying to gain publicity. Once you’ve got that base following I think it’s a gift to that fans to have a physical album with artwork and some left-field songs you generally wouldn’t release as a single or on an EP. Casino Sunrise would love to do an album in the future but at our current release rate it would probably take us a decade to finish.

8. When not consumed with all things musical, what do you do to tune out or reset?

I’ve recently started playing Australian Rules Football after about 14 years on the sideline. I think my brother dared me 5 years ago and I finally managed to get the courage to play.
It’s not very rock n roll, but I try and keep the fitness up as I think it helps with creativity and definitely giving everything you can in live performances.

9. You have a handful of singles under your belt so far, what does the immediate future hold?

We’ve had a number of shows over the last few months and we are really enjoying being out and about in the live scene again. There may also be a sneaky release later in the year but we are in the very early stages of talking game plan about it. We might even branch out and do an EP!

10. Lastly, Prince or Michael Jackson?

Going to have to say MJ. Although it’s not an easy decision because Prince can give himself BJ’s.

‘Castles’ out now.
