Interview With Joe Greenetz from Sherwood By Chris

Sherwood is a great band who have gone from strength to
strength.
Ever since I first heard them on purevolume last year. I
was hooked.
They are one good indie rock band
Who has released one of the great albums this year.

1. How did the band form?

Some of the guys met at an open mic night during college.
It started as a 3-piece, and has since evolved into the
current lineup.

2. Who were your idols growing up?

As a drummer, my idols have always been Dave Grohl and Matt
Cameron (ex-Soundgarden, currently plays for Pearl Jam). I
was kind of a grunge kid.

3. How did the recording process for the album
go?

Dan wrote the basic songs, then we arranged them for full
band, made demos of them, made revisions, then hit the
studio.

4. What has the response been to the album?

People seem to really like it. We find that our music
appeals to both the younger crowd, and a little bit to our
parents’ generation (probably because we listen to the
Beatles and the Beach Boys too much).

5. What inspired you when making the album?

Like I said, we listen to a lot of the Beatles and the
Beach Boys, and we tend to take that classical approach to
songwriting. We had also spent most of the previous year on
the road, under somewhat stressful living conditions. The
prospect of spending another year or two living like that
made us want to create an album that would be enjoyed by as
many people as possible, but still be engaging to fans of
our earlier work.

6. Has the internet helped with your music?

Absolutely. We’ve spent an unhealthy amount of time online,
using Myspace and Purevolume to get our name out there. So
far, the hard work has paid off nicely.

7. What are your thoughts to filesharing and the mp3
format?

For independent bands, and bands signed to tiny labels,
filesharing can be a great asset. We benefited greatly from
people downloading our songs and sharing them with their
friends. For record labels and bigger bands that don’t rely
as much on word-of-mouth credibility, illegal filesharing
means they don’t make as much money, which can be a bummer
if they’ve spent half a million dollars recording and
marketing an album.

8. Have you had much response from labels
overseas?

Not too much. I think we’ve heard from a label or two in
the UK, but nothing’s really come of it. That sort of
business belongs more to our record label than to us.

9. If you could work with any one who would it
be?

One person whose work I’ve always admired is a fellow named
Adam Kaspar. He’s a producer and mixer, and anything he
mixes is pure gold — he’s especially great with drums.
Listen to Foo Fighters’ “There Is Nothing Left To Lose” or
Soundgarden’s “Down On The Upside”… the drums are
AMAZING!

10. How did you get signed to Sidecho Records?

Sidecho’s president, James, kept hearing about us all over
the place. A lot of it had to do with us getting on the
Warped Tour and selling as many of our EP’s as we did. He
approached us with a great deal, and we took it.

11. Was the recording process different for the album
than the EP?

A little bit. The process for the album was basically a
more intensive version of that for the EP.

12. What are your thoughts on reality tv talent shows
(e.g. american idol)?

Living in an RV, we never get to watch television. So,
believe it or not, none of us has ever watched any reality
shows.

13. If you could have a dream gig line up who would they
be?

Death Cab for Cutie, Jimmy Eat World, and a reunited At The
Drive-In. The audience might be a little confused, but
Sherwood would be happy.

14. Have you had much support from radio?

We’ve been played on a few college radio stations, but
never on big rock stations.

15. If you could be on The Simpsons or Spongebob
Squarepants where would you be?

The Simpsons. I’ve never even watched a full episode of
Spongebob. Like I said, we don’t watch television.

16. What is on your stereo at the moment?

The new albums by Coldplay and Foo Fighters.

17. What are some of your favourite musicial
artists/bands?

My Myspace profile lists the following: Superdrag,
Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, Jackson Browne, Interpol, The
Beatles, Mid-Beach Boys, Twothirtyeight, Iron &
Wine.

18. What movies you have seen lately you have really
enjoyed?

The only movie I’ve seen lately was the new Charlie &
The Chocolate Factory. I thought it was really great. Well
done, Mr. Burton!

19 What are your favourite movies?

O Brother, Where Art Thou?; Rushmore; In America.

20. How do you think MySpace helps the band?

It’s a great tool that allows us to easily reach thousands
of people, and we can do it from the comfort of our homes
(actually, our parents’ homes).

Thanks for your time. Any last words?

Yes, please set your internet browser’s home page to
