Set Sail
Set Sail are one of the most talked about bands on the Australian Music Scene from Busking to touring and in between, these guys are making a name for themselves here in Australia. Their music is winning fans all over the country. With a new release in the ep Hey, I talk to Josiah from the band about it all.

1. How did the band form?
We met up in uni, started busking playing covers to pay rent. In November of 2011 we decided to ‘officially’ start as a band and start recording and releasing original material, we’ve been traveling around the world and playing ever since.
2. Are you surprised how successful you’ve gotten so far?
Yes and no, it’s very cool what the response has been – we never expected things to happen at this level so quickly. At the same time, we’ve been playing every day either on the street or at venues for over a year now so it’s somewhat of a natural growth as every day you’re meeting new fans at shows or seeing new people on Facebook from the street shows. It’s been a fun journey.
3. How has social networking helped you as a band?
Social networking is pretty incredible with how if connects artists and fans, we rely extremely heavily on it as we try to keep as personal a connection as possible with our fans, whether that’s chatting to them online or releasing heaps of different YouTube videos from traveling or playing. Along with that, social allows for music to spread quite organically through sharing so it’s great seeing friends of people that have seen us live start following the band as well from their mate’s recommendation.
4. What is the new ep Hey! about?
Most of the songs were written while we were in Europe of the US traveling so there’s a definite ‘on the road’ feel to it, whether that’s songs about experiences in different cities or countries as well as the vibe of chasing summer around the world. We left Australia just as winter was hitting and then went through summer in europe and America straight back into summer here and I think that definitely shows in the style and sound of the tracks.
5. What inspires you when writing music?
I get most inspired by listening to other music. A lot of times I’ll be listening to a song or to Brandon playing guitar and then have a song idea come to mind and just drop everything to work on it. I think it’s very important to listen to a lot of great music when writing.
6. Who would you most to play a show with?
Kimbra. Babe.
7. If you could have any one in a video clip who would it be?
Lana Del Rey
8. What musicians has inspired you as a band?
Beach Boys, Beatles, Patrick Watson, Grimes, Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, Beirut
9. Were you happy with how the fans had supported you as band with the whole visa issue?
The response to that was incredible, we’re very grateful to our fans for the support and for everyone else who helped out with getting Brandon back.
10. What is next for the band
Releasing this record and seeing where it goes, we’ll be touring it heavily around Australia and the US, excited to see what happens!
