New Music Wednesday

WIESINGER’s motto is Fun Music for Fun People. Despite being located in the rural county of Barrhead, WIESINGER is quickly carving a name for themselves as being one of the hardest working and catchiest up-and-coming pop rock acts in Western Canada. While only having begun releasing songs in early 2022, they have already performed alongside Tyler Shaw, The Royal Foundry, Martin Kerr, Jon Bryant and many more amazing acts.

The trio consist of husband and wife duo Justin (lead singer/bass/keys/songwriter/video guy) and Chelsey Wiesinger (drums/percussion/samples) and Daniel Bellerose on lead guitar. Numerous songs on their sophomore album, Stuck in Your Head, are based on experiences from Justin’s award winning memoir The Childlike Heist (2019). He dealt with mental health struggles for much of his young adult life and used a few songs from those seasons, as well as newly penned ones, to help share hope and his journey of recovery with listeners.

Adelaide based artist Eliza Dickson has just unveiled her soulful new single called ‘Champagne’

‘Champagne’ is taken from her highly anticipated upcoming album, which is scheduled for release on Friday 8th December.

Eliza Dickson combines her roots of RnB, Jazz and Soul, and her original music features unique grooves and synthesised sounds with an underpinning in neo-soul.

The multitalented artist is the primary singer for the Australian Army Band Adelaide and has performed with many notable artists such as Kate Ceberano and James Morrison.

Eliza has performed at many high-profile events such as Clipsal 500Civic Park CarolsGenerations in JazzAFL ANZAC Day Game and Adelaide Fringe Festival. She has also made international appearances on stages in New York.

After spending the past two years working hard in the studio, Eliza Dickson is now ready to unleash the first taste of her new album to the world.

New single ‘Champagne’ is available on all major online stores and streaming services.

On her sixth album, singer-songwriter Norma MacDonald explores new songwriting tactics, reimagines old demos, and conducts sound experimentations that expand her folk and country influences into 60s pop, Motown harmonies, and jangly early millennium indie-rock. MacDonald lives in Halifax and has earned multiple Music Nova Scotia and East Coast Music Award nominations for her 5 previous albums.

The opening chords of In Waves set the record spinning in January, but the mood is wholly autumnal: lush, then resolute. A harvest and a hope. In Waves may begin in winter, but it slips gently through the seasons. She and partner Chad Peck (of indie-shoegaze trio Kestrels) enlisted JUNO-nominated producer Daniel Ledwell (Jenn Grant, Fortunate Ones) at Echo Lake Studio in Nova Scotia.

“I didn’t realize I was writing about the pandemic when I wrote ‘Comes in Waves’ until probably a few months later,” she says about the latest track. “I think I had told myself that I just came up with this song about the desire to change everything about myself and feeling stagnant out of nowhere.”

Sun Junkies are a 4-piece band from Brantford, Ontario that formed in 2018. Cutting their teeth in the Southern Ontario indie scene, as well as touring the USA and Canada’s east coasts, the four best friends have had plenty of time to hone their songwriting abilities.

Having just finished recording their magnum opus: Parachuting, the band’s sound and image are more realized than ever before. Sun Junkies’ sophomore LP discusses the toxic nature of overindulging in nostalgia, the existential dread that comes with measurable time, and the insane pressure of trying to make the most of fleeting youth.

Although it’s mainly about time, Parachuting has many other recurring themes and deals with topics like the soul crushing monotony of the 40 hour work week, as well as the coping mechanisms and anxiety that come with such a mundane reality. Featuring an orchestral arrangement of pianos, violins and horns juxtaposed with growling feedback and distorted guitars, these songs will (hopefully) make you feel like you’re unreasonably sad at the most debaucherous party you’ve ever been to.

Sydney Mae is an award-winning Pop/Adult Pop recording and performing artist based in Toronto. She has been recognized internationally for her gift of superior storytelling and room-silencing vocals that draw you in to see the world through her eyes. Originally from Calgary, Mae’s contemporary musical influences include Maggie Rogers, Donovan Woods, JP Saxe & Léon, to name a few.

“My music has always come from a place of deep self-awareness and learning.” explains Mae. “There’s something within me that is desperate to explore the human experience, and when others see themselves in my lyrics, it’s truly still a bizarre experience. I have a mountain of gratitude for that special connection.”

Her new EP, Rhythm, is carefully driven by themes of self-compassion & resilience. “Each of these songs was written from a lesson that brought me a little bit closer to finding and honoring a deeper connection (or rhythm) with myself before anyone or anything else,” explains Mae.

Nova Scotia-based singer-songwriter Maggie Andrew draws together a melange of influences in her lavish, innovative (s)alt-pop, fusing the likes of irreverent punk, melodic rap, simmering R&B, and fang-bearing indie rock.On her latest electrifying single—the moody, rain-soaked “Come Clean”—Andrew bares her teeth again to send a vicious missive to someone she thought was a friend. Over brooding, loud-quiet-loud guitar (courtesy of Carleton Stone) and skittering hi-hats, the multi-faceted artist insists that she’s not sad—she’s fucking mad.

Hobart based Indie Rock lord Sam Hunn has just dropped his new single called ‘Kurt Cobain’.

The single, although tongue-in-cheek, is a commentary on the long-standing issue of glamourizing musicians suffering from a decline in mental health.

Sam Hunn draws influence from the likes of WeezerNirvanaSmashing PumpkinsBallpark MusicCourtney Barnett, and Neil Young to create his intoxicating brand of Indie Rock.

Also forming one third of long-running Tasmanian band Verticoli, Sam recently began releasing music under his own name to broaden his creative horizons. He debuted his solo career with the release of singles ‘Thirty’ and ‘Skate or Die’ earlier this year.

As part of Verticoli, Sam and his bandmates achieved recognition as winners of the Triple J Unearthed ‘Party in the Paddock’ competition and have received strong community radio support over the course of 3 EP’s and 2 LP’s to date.

Sam Hunn is now ready to unveil his latest solo offering.

New single called ‘Kurt Cobain’ is available on all major online stores and streaming services.

In a world full of factory-produced radio-friendly pop songs, it’s absolutely refreshing to be sitting back with headphones on and experiencing the music of JEENGold Control is JEEN’s delightful 4th LP this decade, coming February 2, 2024Gold Control glides along the same trajectory as its predecessors while maintaining its own identity – grunge, garage, psych-rock, punk, with tinges of shoegaze.

“Hold My Head Up Higher” sees JEEN join creative forces once again with long-time collaborator, Canadian indie musician and producer, Ian Blurton. Ian has taken the role of co-producer on JEEN’s last five albums and their strength in working together shines on this track. Its swirling chorus shimmers along the flesh and actually induces frisson with ease which is a hard sensation to help facilitate through song.

Kellie Loder‘s musical journey began on the shores of Newfoundland & Labrador, lending to their unmatched songwriting prowess, and distinctive blend of folk, Americana and indie pop influences.

Loder‘s highly anticipated fourth studio record is set to drop globally in 2024. Elevating themselves to new heights, the upcoming record is a stunningly crafted masterpiece with stories of love, heartbreak, life and transitions. “Can’t Go Back,” the album’s second single, gives listeners a glimpse of the pure authenticity of one of Canada’s most promising and celebrated songwriters. As spoken by Howie Mandel and Simon Cowell (Canada’s Got Talent), “Loder has a bright future ahead,” and with this next offering, one thing is for certain, Kellie Loder is a towering talent about to explode on the world stage.

Originally from Uxbridge, Ontario, Tom Hanley began his musical journey as the singer/guitarist in a slew of pop punk bands with “terrible names,” performing at high school parties. It was there he fell in love with playing in bands and writing music. In college, he started a six piece funk band, JUICE, recording and touring for eight years. After years of deliberation, countless wedding band gigs, and 60 songs written later, he’s ready to share his debut single, “Overnight.”

Together with songwriter/producer Nixon Boyd (Hollerado, Dizzy), Hanley has taken the first steps to establishing his sound and production aesthetic as a solo artist. “Overnight” was written right at the beginning of the pandemic. It’s about the first few days of lockdown and how it felt like everything was changing so fast and we had no control. It’s also the title of his forthcoming EP.

Continuing her recent string of dynamic electronic pop single releases, iskwē | ᐃᐢᑫᐧᐤ (short for waseskwan iskwew, meaning “blue sky woman”) is sharing “Part Two,” its title meant to reflect “the second act in the story of a wonderful love affair that came to a crashing halt.”

“This is a song about a broken heart, my broken heart, after a rocky relationship finally came crashing down,” explains iskwē. “We should have known, and we probably did, that things would end as passionately as they began. We ran the other to the ground while simultaneously pulling each other back to our feet, but the landing got slipperier and slipperier with each recovery, until enough was enough.”

Mike Ruby is a singer-songwriter from Toronto with a story that’s far from ordinary. He moved to New York at 19 to pursue a career in jazz as a sax player, receiving a full scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music. That education and exposure gave him a unique sense of musicianship that shines through his melodic writing to this day. After signing a record deal to a subsidiary of Universal Music, he began playing with Brooklyn-based synth pop band St. Lucia, which opened his ears to a realm of synth and dance-like possibilities. His first fully independent release, from debut EP You Wrote These Songs, was the single “Close” which broke Top 40 radio across Canada and on the Billboard charts.

His second solo EP, A Million You’s, consists of what-ifs, self discovery, and introspection. The emotive feature track “A Million You’s” encompasses all of these themes, taking the listener on a vulnerable journey through an emotional songwriter’s lens. Co-produced with Nathan Ferraro, an incredible songwriter in his own right, this raw lyrically driven single is complimented by real instrumentation which gives both the soaring melodies and visceral lyrics room to breathe, bringing you face to face with Mike’s inner monologue.

Hey Chris,

Hope all is well!

3x GRAMMY Award/2x JUNO Award-winner Chin Injeti’s cathartic new album, VESSELS: Volume Three, was inspired by the art of collaboration and made through conversations and friendships. Produced mostly by Injeti aside from daysormay (who features on “Make You Understand,” the record’s focus track), a lot of the tracks deal with self-realization and remind its listeners that no one is truly alone.

Nova Scotia-based singer-songwriter Maggie Andrew draws together a melange of influences in her lavish, innovative (s)alt-pop, fusing the likes of irreverent punk, melodic rap, simmering R&B, and fang-bearing indie rock.

On her latest electrifying single—the moody, rain-soaked “Come Clean“—Andrew bares her teeth again to send a vicious missive to someone she thought was a friend. Over brooding, loud-quiet-loud guitar (courtesy of Carleton Stone) and skittering hi-hats, the multi-faceted artist insists that she’s not sad—she’s fucking mad.
