Interview With Lindi Ortega By Chris 11/11/05
Lindi Ortega is a fantastic talented singer songwriter
from Canada.
I really think her music is fantastic. So naturally she had
to featured here.
Read on for what she has to say
1.How did you get into music?
Well… I think music was put in my blood by a long line of
music lovers. My dad was in a Latino band when I was
growing up. Therefore, I was always surrounded by music.
Seeing my father on stage made me want to be just like him.
The only difference was. He played bass. And somehow I was
born with this ability to sing. So as soon as someone told
me I was good at it. I just spread my wings and started
flying and I haven’t stopped since.
2.What were your major influences?
Singers that have passionate voices have always influenced
me. You can hear the pain and aching in every word. I find
that mind blowing. Janis Joplin was incredible for
that…as was Jeff Buckley. I’m also influenced by amazing
song writing skills. I think Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan
wrote some genius stuff. Lastly, I am influenced by music
that is unique, and dynamically interesting…like The
Doors.
3. Do you think MySpace is good for artists and has it
helped you?
MySpace is incredible for artists and I urge every new up
and coming act to get them on here as one of the first
steps in marketing your music to an audience that would not
hear of you otherwise. Get on this here site, and work it
till the cows come home. That is my advice!
4. What has the response been to latest
release?
My last release was in 2002. An album called “THE TASTE OF
FORBIDDEN FRUIT”. I only pressed about 500 copies so not
enough people got to hear it. However, it got incredible
reviews from Toronto’s major music publications and that
was amazing for me to see that.
5. Where do you think you will be in 10 years?
I would love to think that I will be continuing to record
albums and touring all over the place and playing my music
for anyone that will listen. Maybe I’ll be in Australia
playing a show or two!
6. Who would you most like to record a song
with?
I think it would be a hoot to record a song with TOM
WAITS.
7. What made you want to go out and play
music?
The first time I sang on a stage I got this feeling of
Euphoria. It was like a drug that I didn’t want to quit. I
just love that whole connecting with an audience. I love
the people that come out to hear me sing. It really touches
me that they enjoy what I do.
8. What are your thoughts on file sharing and the mp3
format?
Well. For myself. I know if I love an artist, I want to
have their CD in my collection. I want to see the liner
notes. And the CD artwork and the lyrics.
I have downloaded a few songs myself. I don’t think there
is anything wrong with that. What I do think is wrong is
downloading an entire artist’s album. In my case, I usually
will down load one or two songs. And if I like them I go
out and buy the album. Gotta support what you love right?
That’s what I do and maybe that’s just me. I’m not going to
be preachy and tell everyone else what to do. It’s up to
them.
9. Do you think the Internet is good for helping artists
get known?
ABSOLUTELY. The Internet can help you reach people you
could never reach otherwise if you weren’t touring.
10. What bands/artists are you listening to
lately?
Lately I’ve been on a NANCY SINATRA kick. I love her work
with Lee Hazlewood. There is also a singer called Lhasa
from Montreal who has an album that she sings in Spanish
called “La Llorna” and it’s incredible.
11. Who has helped you out the most?
My dad. He always drives me to shows, fixes my guitar, and
supports me like crazy and I love him for that.
And I can’t forget the fans of what I do and how they have
helped and continue to help me a great deal to get my name
out there to people. Especially these amazing people on
MySpace who play my music and put my banners up on their
pages. It’s just so touching to have this kind of support
from people you’ve never met. People who just really dig
the music for some reason.
12. If you could be on any show where would you be
playing?
I think I would love to take my music over to Mexico where
my dad is from and play in some old dirty bar for a bunch
of drunken Mexicans. They might throw things at me. But
either way… it would be an experience.
13. What has the response been like for your music on
the web?
It’s been amazing. I love it.
14. Any responses from record labels?
That’s the million-dollar question. I guess you’ll find out
when my album is released in early 2006.
15. What is the music scene like Canada?
Not sure about Canada perse, as I have yet to visit parts
of my own country. But the Toronto independent music scene
is fantastic. A lot of love and support for each other and
some real genuine talent.
Thanks for your time any last words
whatever you do in life… do it with passion.
