Interview With Julie Dickson By Chris 13/4/09
Julie Dickson is an actor and model out South Australia, but she also manages a local hip hop group, runs a spray tanning company, writing two scripts, she one busy person. With some work to be released this year this actor is a person to watch out for so read on.
1. Why did you become a model?
It all happened when I was living in Brisbane I entered a modeling competition and enjoyed it so much and it really boosted my confidence, from there I had photographers contact me wanting to do photo shoots which was more suitable for me due to my height restrictions (I only stand at 157cm!!) Modeling for me is something I enjoy doing, it is great to work with a fantastic photographer and create outstanding photos.
2. What have you learn’t from being one?
A few things actually ! It is amazing the amount of editing that the photographer puts in to make you look perfect. Sometimes I look at a photo and be like “is that really me!?” Models you see in magazines look nothing like their photos just like me when I wake up in the morning !! I have also learned that it is hard work! After a shoot you are guaranteed to wake up with a sore back and neck as some of the most uncomfortable and un-natural poses look the most amazing.
3. How did you get involved with the film The Counterpart?
I had literally just arrived in South Australia and knew not a sole at that time. I registered myself and my modeling photos on a site called StarNow, and Lucas Scheffel the Producer/Director made contact with me to play a minor role. From there he cast me to play not only one but two minor roles and the main character of “Loud Lilly” a hard ass Pommy Hit Woman. The Film is set for a premiere screening on the 16th May 2009 and will be available on DVD. Lucas was impressed by the fact that I had played an extra in the film “Undead” that is what caught his attention.
4. Has the internet helped with getting you work and getting yourself more known as an actor?
Absolutely !! Everyone is on the internet these days and it is a fantastic promotional and marketing tool.
5. Are their any plans to go overseas with the acting?
In the future most definitely !! For now though a move interstate may be the go. I have many goals that I want to achieve however I know that I have to work dam hard to get there.
6. How do you prepare for a role?
I live the life of my character and do a lot of research, acting is very strange…. I imagine that I am holding a pill that is full of my characters life and emotion and then I swallow it and become the character. Every actor has their own way, this one works for me. It’s a hard thing to explain.
7. How did you get into acting?
Ever since I was a little girl I have loved the spotlight and was always involved in school plays and performances. Through High School I studied Speech and Drama and after school you would find me at the local theatre group rehearsing rather than at my desk at home studying Math or history. I spent the first 7 years of my life in my home town in Scotland in the UK and used to watch Neighbors and Home and Away and I used to say to mum and dad every time it came on “I want to be on that show”…. I’m still waiting but it will happen…
8. How is that coming along?
I am working on something new each month, I am very lucky at the moment as the doors of opportunity are starting to open in all directions. In this industry you have to take the highs with the lows and success, fame and fortune don’t happen overnight. I am working very hard but enjoying the ride.
9. What has been the highlight of both? I Can’t really say, every step in my career I take is a highlight as they help me move forward. I find it strange that people look up to me and that I inspire so many people I am just me and very down to earth I don’t take compliments very well lol but I guess it is a highlight being inspirational.
10. Do you think shows like underbelly have help getting more good work for actors in Australia?
Yes. And I really think their should be more like it. Australia has so much talent and potential however the work is just no there. Television is full of reality TV shows these days and although they are entertaining it doesn’t look to good for the acting industry.
11. What has been your favorite modeling campaign so far?
I have enjoyed all of them, but I must say getting in Zoo Weekly 7 times in one year was a great marketing strategy even though I didn’t ask for it.
12. What is on your stereo at the moment?
I am actually listening to T.D.B “My Baby” T.D.B (Tha Deadly Boyz) are a hip hop rap duo that I just happen to manage.
13. What are some of your favorite musical artists/bands?
I love Local bands such as T.D.B (of course) as well as Sonic Monkey. I love Dance music and have to say my favorite at the moment is Cascada.
14. What movies you have seen lately you have really enjoyed?
I love scary movies and went and saw Friday the 13th as well as the other night watched “Solcist” and “Shrooms”. I recently watch “House Bunny” and loved that as well for a bit of light hearted fun.
15. What are your favorite movies?
Braveheart, The Notebook, Legally Blonde & Princess Diaries and pretty much anything scary !!
16. What is next for you? I am in the process of writing two scripts for a short and feature film. The feature that I am writing is based on true events and I will more than likely play the main character in it, I am striving for a cinema release and hoping to get some big names involved. I also have a few projects here and there including short films & Music Videos where I am acting and/or assistant directing as well as planning more modeling shoots. I own my own mobile spray tanning business “Socialite Tans” and am the Business Development Manager for “Scheffilm Productions” as well as Manage T.D.B.. my life is hectic but I know with hard work and persistence I can make all my dreams come true. Acting is where my passion lies though and I try to focus the majority of my energy in that direction.
17. Who would you most like to work with?
Mel Gibson & Cameron Diaz
