JP Klipspringer
JP Klipspringer is the solo project from 23-year-old Melbournian Jack Poulson. ‘Bury Me’ marks the second single the project has
yielded thus far, all of which has been produced with Simon Lam (I’lls, Kins) and mastered by Andrei Eremin (Chet Faker, Fractures). Read on and find out what he has to say about it all.

1. Are you happy how things have gone for you so far?
Definitely. It’s only early days for this project, but so far everything has run really smoothly. I’ve worked with a great producer, recruited some fantastic musicians for the live band, and played a few really nice shows. Can’t complain at all.
2. What inspires you when writing music?
You can never quite put your finger on what gets you going as a songwriter. The obvious answer is hearing a fantastic song that you wish you wrote yourself. There’s nothing like a big dose of jealousy and awe in equal measure to get you writing.
3. What is your latest song about?
It would be a whole lot less mysterious if I gave a big analysis of the song, but I guess it’s about love. Aren’t all pop songs about love in some way?
4. What do you like about touring?
I’ve only toured interstate once (with my other band, The Zanes), and it was a total blast. The best parts were being able to play to a room of total strangers who were into our stuff, and, of course, travelling with your best mates and getting up to no good in a new city.
5. How important to you is touring regional alongside touring the cities?
I’m yet to play a regional show, but it’s something I can’t wait to do. Touring the regions is definitely important. I remember when I was an underager and couldn’t get into pubs to see my favourite bands play – it was the worst! I felt genuine pain each time they’d come to Melbourne and tease me with their effectively meaningless proximity. I imagine living in a regional town neglected by touring bands would be similar if you couldn’t make the four of five hour trip to a major city to catch a weeknight gig. If playing a show in some of the less travelled areas is the only way dedicated fans get to see their favourite acts, then it is definitely a great thing.
6. What has been your favourite show to date?
I’ve only played one full-band show as JP Klipspringer, which was last Saturday night at the Toff. I think we nailed it, and I can’t wait to play more. The Zanes put on an EP launch at the Toff back in November 2012, and that was definitely the most fun I’ve had playing a show. Somehow the room sold out and the atmosphere was nuts. I won’t be forgetting it.
7. How does social media help you as an artist?
When you’re a new act without a budget, social media is your best form of communication and advertising. We mightn’t be able to purchase big ads on community radio or streetpress, and we may not have the cash to print off a thousand colour posters and plaster them all over the inner suburbs, but we can sure create a Facebook event and post a few status updates. I remember ten years ago when I was a nerd fan of a few bands I would have given anything to see live, I signed up to mailing lists and joined chat forums to find out everything I possibly could about my heroes. Now we can just check their Twitter or Facebook and find what we need to know straight away. So it helps artists (and fans) in a big way. No stupid chat room alias required.
8. If you could have anybody in a video clip who would it be?
If I got to be in the clip with them (and if I got to write the script), I’d say Rashida Jones or Selma Blair. If it was just someone else miming my songs with a straight face, I think Sam Simmons would be the ideal candidate. Or maybe all four of us could be in it together? Hmm.
9. What’s your favorite venue to play at?
It’d be a three-way tie between the Toff, Yah Yah’s and the Espy. The Toff for its sound and all round class; Yah Yah’s for its dirty vibe and party atmosphere straight after the set; and the Espy for its versatility and regular crowd.
10. What does 2014 have in store for you?
I’ve just released my first single and film clip as JP Klipspringer. Next up will be a finished EP, an EP launch, and plenty of other gigs. By late Winter I’d like to be onto my next round of releases. Hopefully people keep enjoying the sounds and we can grow our audience a little more by the end of the year. Hard work will be the key.
