Jack On Fire Interview

Jack On Fire

Jack On Fire are a great Aussie band to get to know, I dig what they are doing and they are worth checking out. So read on.

You can see them launch their latest single at The Old Bar in Melbourne on the 21st of September

1. What inspired the new song?
An unfortunate experience with the most unsavory of fellows. It was a bizarre and sleazy episode that spurred me into writing a cautionary tale of degeneracy.

2. Are you happy how things have gone so far?
I got a kick out of the recording process this time around, probably more so than any other session’s we’ve done to date. Response from the few radio plays we’ve had has been encouraging.

3. What inspires the band when writing music?
Our collective love for Levon.

4. What has been your favorite show to date?
I always enjoy the slightly seedier sticky carpet type shows. These tend to be a bit boozier you don’t get those punters who just stand there arms folded, judging you and thinking that “they could do it so much better”. My favourite was probably at the now closed Greyhound in Saint Kilda. It was one of our first gigs in the East after making the trek across the Nullarbor and it was without a most eye-opening experience – there really were some colourful barflys in that joint.

5. Who would you guys most like to collaborate with?
I’m sure you’d get a totally different answer depending which member of the group you asked. Ben has been thrashing a bunch of US psych/folk records of late so he’d probably pick an artist from that world, I’m still a huge fan of all the Aussie swamp rock stuff so I’d love to work with some of the legends from that scene one day.

6. Do you think it’s harder to stand out on the Internet as a band these’s days?
There’s definitely an abundance of music online but I don’t think it’s any harder to stand out then in the pre-world wide web days. If anything it has enabled more artists to reach a broader listenership and seems to me that it’s easier for consumers to cut through all the noise and find material that is in line with their own tastes.

7. What is next for the band?
Now that the single is pretty much in the bag we’ll focus on finishing off the record and making sure the new material is gig ready. The recorded tracks are arranged a little bit differently than how we bash them out in a live scenario so we will have to wrack our brains to remember who played what and when.

8. What does 2013 mean to you?
Some people think that 13 is an unlucky number. Does that mean that 2013 will be an unlucky year? Bearing in mind that we are already at the half way mark and we are yet to see ANY experimental monkeys escape from a laboratories causing widespread pandemic and no giant prehistoric sea monsters have risen from the murky ocean depths to lay waste to our cities – 2013 I am disappointed.
