Interview With Dan From Fourth Floor Collapse

One of Perth’s great bands and I figured I need to know
some more about the band

1.how did the band form?

Rhys and Michael had known each other since primary school.
I went to high school with Michael. They had half a band
and I had half a band, so we got together in my garage, as
teenagers tend to do.

2.what were your major influnces?

Were? Geez, it’s hard to remember. Several grunge
bands and classics from the 60’s made an early
impact. Now it’s certainly all over the shop.

3.if you could have a three band bill who would they
be?

Today, I’d pick:
The Pixies
Tool
Tom Waits

4. what is the perth music scene like?

Well there are lot of great bands. And there are a few
venues that support original music. The gig-going culture
isn’t there anymore like it used to be. It’s
hard to consistently pull big crowds.

Tough drink driving laws have hurt Perth live music,
despite saving countless lives. We don’t have such a
big inner city population or a scene that can have live
music 7 nights a week to support the huge number of band we
have.

Perth people have to drive to gigs and some people just
find it too hard to get to venues and I think they must
just stay home. Lots will still come out for big shows
though.

There’s an optimistic feeling around Perth that there
probably hasn’t been since the heady days of 1995
when the acronyms (MTV and REM) visited.

5. where do you think you will be in 10 years?

In a tour bus somewhere in Europe. And we’ll have
released another 6 albums. Not a bad lil’ effort for
10 years work.

6. what has been your best gig you have played so
far?

Hard to say, there’s been some good ones. Our first
album launch is memorable – In a theatre, big crowd,
total darkness at the right times. Recently, we had a
memorable one at the Vic on the Park in Sydney that came
close to being an all time fave.

7. what australian artist or band influence the band the
most ?

I’d like to say Midnight Oil. It doesn’t quite
come across in what we do, neither are we political but
they set a pretty high standard. You Am I and Powderfinger
must also be well admired by just about any current Aussie
band.

8. what is your favourite venue to play?

I’m really enjoying the Rosemount Hotel in Perth at
the moment. There’s a great feeling about the place,
bands look and sound great there. I think the Annandale in
Sydney is almost the perfect venue also. Great size, sound
and lights.

9. who would most like to record a song with?

Perhaps Fiona Apple. For a while it was hard to think of
anyopne better to record with than Fourth Floor Collapse,
but Fiona would add a nice counterpoint to our

10. how important is triple j for getting australian
music heard ?

It’s still very important because it has a national
reach. They’ve helped us a lot and they can still
turn a neato little band into a national touring band
almost overnight. The fact that they still have about four
times the Australian content that commercial stations do is
awesome and can’t be underestimated.
