East of Zurich is a Brisbane based 4 piece who have reimagined the guitar driven indie-rock of the early 90’s, adding a more melodic feel through the use of lush keyboard overlays. After a run of singles and the option to play live in Brisbane again, the band are unleashing their debut EP into the world on August 21 alongside a launch show at Blutes Bar in Brisbane on the 23rd of August (with Spillage, Smallest Horse & Sir Glenn Brady). The band’s self titled debut EP, produced at Airlock studios by Konstantin Kersting (Tones & I, The Jungle Giants, Mallrat) and mixed by Steve Kempnich (Dune Rats, Violent Soho) is a reflection on the unpredictable nature of life and the personal relationships that guide the four member’s collective experience. With undertones of the angst-ridden Indie rock reminiscent of the early 90’s it is ultimately an uplifting collection of songs, as self-doubt and awkwardness give way to maturity, responsibility… and kids. East of Zurich consists of Martin Brabec (guitar and lead vocals), David Simpfendorfer (bass and backing vocals), Nick Ng (keyboards and backing vocals) and Anthony Timbrell (drums and no vocals under any circumstances). The band was formed through a combination of happy circumstance and professional connections, having slowly built a repertoire of original songs over the last 18 months. With Martin and David both being school teachers, the remaining members took leave and recorded and mixed the whole EP in less than two weeks in the April school holidays 2019. Previously having success in his home nation of Switzerland as frontman for Indie band Flink, before moving to Australia in pursuit of family and a tan, Martin met Anthony after being contacted by a musician through Bandmix. While the third member disappeared after the initial jam, Martin and Anthony searched around for a bass player to form a band, and after a couple of false starts were introduced to Dave and the rest is history!
