In Lucid Dreams is a talented musician from Australia. Liked what I had heard and knew I had to interview him for my site this is what he had to say.

1. What inspired your new song Rise?

The original incarnation of the song was written years ago while I was living in Melbourne. A couple of people close to me were both going through pretty tough times so they were really my muse for the song and lyrics back then.   The song went through a massive evolution through 2020/21 back home in Perth though, through which time the inspiration shifted from my own backyard to the global crisis of Covid which really helped in taking it to the next level.

2. What will be expected from upcoming material?

I’m looking to start recording my second single, ‘Chasing Ghosts’ real soon, which I really feel is my definitive song (if I had to pick one right now). I say this as it has a real grungy vibe about it, particularly early on but it then goes on this crazy tangent of multiple guitar and vocal layerings that’s much more reminiscent of modern prog/post rock. So I feel it really captures most of my primary influences, from my roots to the present day.

3. How did playing a show after so long feel for you?

It was awesome! Getting to play ‘Rise’ live for the first time was definitely the highlight.

4. Do you think it’s harder to get a gig up and running these days with the threat of cases happening a lot?

I don’t think it impacts putting a show together so much (provided current restrictions will allow it). It’s more the uncertainty of whether or not the show will actually be able to go ahead at the scheduled date that I’ve found to be most frustrating.

5. How important are video clips for you?

Incredibly. I have a performance clip in the works for ‘Rise’. I’m really looking forward to putting the video together for my next single, ‘Chasing Ghosts’ though as I recently came up with a short film idea that could work really well as the music video (or part thereof). I revisited the lyrics to that song afterwards and actually edited them to suit, as the visual component in my head was all about chronological events and scenes, which allowed me to get them to flow much more cohesively than they had previously.

6. How was the recording session for your new single?

Like a seemingly endless emotional rollercoaster ride and a half.. haha   It was amazing to finally be putting something down properly after years and years of this essentially being a bedroom project but it was also pretty stressful at times to say the least.   Firstly there’s a ridiculous amount of vocal layerings in the song so a lot of time was spent getting all those tracked well enough. The song itself also kept on evolving subtly with every mix (and there were plenty of those). The thing I probably slaved over the most though was the alternate lead vocal lines that appear throughout the song. Getting them all just audible enough without getting too lost or too dominating was at times nothing short of nightmarish haha

7. Did being able to record something after so long fuel the fire in what you are doing?

Oh 100%! It’s such a relief to finally be able to put something out there after all this time and effort! I also feel ‘Rise’ could easily be the most challenging song out of the 8 I have up my sleeve to take to the finish line so I’m looking forward to smashing out the others a fair bit quicker too!

8. What do you think needs to happen to keep festivals financially safe when cases happen?

Continually guaranteeing refunds for punters in the interest of such high cancellation rates for one.

9. Who would you most like to record a song with?

There are many.. But as a Nirvana freak I’d have to say Dave Grohl would probably still be number one haha

10. What do you hope the rest of 2021 has in store for you?

I’m looking to make an official video for this song in the coming weeks. I’m also looking to get a new band together soon so we can start recording my next release, ‘Chasing Ghosts’ as a collective this time round which I’m really looking forward to!
