Em George Interview

The amazing Em George is one of my favourite discoveries of the last few years and she kindly agreed to do another interview. Metropolis is an incredible song worthy of your time. Hopefully soon I will be able to see her play.

1. What inspired your new song Metropolis?

I am really interested in nostalgia and history and how it affects memory.  I find that sometimes memories of certain things get confused and time becomes irrelevant.  This song was about that with the focus on two events merging together.  The energy of the city enhancing all the confusion.  Musically, artists like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Carole King influenced this song.  I love their fluidity with melody and honesty of lyrics.

2. What will be expect from up coming material?

My songs on this upcoming EP are concerned with 2020- most were written during lockdown and amongst all that upheaval.  It made me realise what was important in life.

3. How did playing a show after so long feel for you?

Unfortunately that gig was cancelled due to the current lockdown, but I cannot wait to play again.

4. Do you think it’s harder to get a gig up and running these days with the threat of cases happening a lot?

I actually think venues are really open to gigs, it’s just that all of them rely on no cases of Covid so it’s really up in the air until the day of the gig really.  Sydney has suffered a lot in recent years live music wise with lockout laws and now the Covid lockdown, and sooo many venues have gone.  The ones left I think are keen to get back to it.

5. How does it feel having the media behind what you are doing?

It’s always nice to have an attentive response to what you create, because more people hear it and become aware but I always create what I love first and let other things follow.

6. How was the recording session for your new single?

It was fantastic!! We managed to record it just before this current lockdown and it was a creative, exciting day.  It was recorded at Oceanic Studios owned by Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil) and the studio is basically a museum of Australian music history and instruments of every description.  A brilliant place to work in.

7. Did being able to record something after so long fuel the fire in what you are doing?.

Absolutely!  I love the writing and recording process more than anything so always so excited to get back to the studio.

8. What do you think needs to happen to keep festivals financially safe when cases happen?

I think the only way is for everyone to get vaccinated!

9. Who would you most like to record a song with?

Such a tough question.  Joni Mitchell and Carole King are top of the list but I would drop absolutely everything to work with Julia Jacklin.

10. What do you hope the rest of 2021 have in store for you?

I hope to release my new EP and hopefully do a tour if Covid allows!
