1. What was the inspiration behind New Thing?
Lyrically, the song is about my home life falling apart but finding someone that takes you out of that mess and whom you can build a new home with. Instrumentally, I was inspired by artists like James Blake who often use vocal loops. I love the idea that vocals can become so many different sounds, and so I wanted to make use of that through a few different loops.
2. Are you happy how the song has been received?
Yeah, pretty happy! I guess people seem to like it because they can probably can relate to it? I don’t know, but it makes me happy people do like it!
3. What inspires you in general when writing music?
My own life unfortunately. Haha. It’s more like therapy for me. I’ve always been inspired by pop and even country artists who are able to write in a few lines how they’re feeling, and for it to be catchy also. So perhaps I might be going through something or perhaps I might hear some cool little beat or lyric or melody and suddenly it sends me into a spiral of writing.
4. Do you prepare before going into the studio or is it a case of see what happens in the studio?
‘studio’ is literally the room next to my bedroom (it’s supposed to be my study haha!) so it’s more like I get in there and just see what happens. My studio is usually the same place I write all my music, so it usually happens all at once anyway.
5. What do you love about performing?
I love the closeness you feel with the artists and audience. Being on the receiving end most of my life, I just love seeing the words come out of the artists mouth and knowing they’re actually real and feeling these things. It just connects people, I guess!
6. What has been the highlight so far?
Probably just meeting people in the industry! It’s especially cool meeting people in bands and in other musical pieces. Its been a long time for me just hiding in my room recording and producing my own music and now to finally come out and perform and be surrounded by like minded people is just cool.
7. Do you have moments where you just can’t write and need to take a break?
Definitely. I find when everything is going right in my life and there’s no drama, I just can’t write a thing. Haha – that’s a bit sad. But I guess the best songs for me come from a place where I’m trying to figure things out.
8. Do you think social media and the Internet has played a huge part in what you do?
Yes! It’s so easy now for anyone to start doing their own stuff and just put it out there. For me it means I can write and record a song and put it online and just promote it using Facebook and other social media sites. I can promote a show I’m doing with just a click of a button. And as a listener, I can just search online, and discover a hundred different artists I never would have found just by using word of mouth or listening to the radio. I guess the internet is where it starts now for artists.
9. What does 2016 have in store for you?
Well, I’ll be doing more shows, more writing and more recording. I’ve got a few more stories to tell so expect a whole lot of songs. It’ll be a big year I hope!
10. Will there be a ep or album in the pipeline?
Yep! Expect an EP sometime during the year 🙂 It’s going to be rad.
